momijizukamori: Shatterstar from the comic series X-Factor, looking very excited (you mean there's more?)
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Forewarning, this is going to be way more than three because no, I refuse to pick just three. Sorted by fandom, assume canon-typical violence and language (I will expand if you're not sure and it's a sticking point).

Sengoku Basara

-マサト on pixiv - mostly Kojuro and Masamune (much of it shippy), though plenty of cameos. The art style is fantastic, there's a great range of subject matter from cute and silly to sexy to hearbreaking. And there's no caving to the tropes and cliches common to BL, particularly in Japan - both dudes are just as masculine as they are in canon, and the older, buffer one is just as submissive as in canon. There's some slightly racey sketches in the mix, though nothing explicit.

-Lead A Horse To Water by Mithrigil - this is a 'next gen' fic which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the characterization is fantastic for both OCs and canon characters, and the plot fits in fantastically as a continuation of canon, which is not an easy skill to master. The life of one Katakura Shigenaga, in line to become the second Katakura Kojuro, and the relationships between the Katakura and Date clans. Includes the line "Don’t bottle it up until you do something stupid and I have to punch the Katakura out of you again." from Masamune which is so perfect. Some explicit sex, and focuses on a wakashudo relationship (institutional pederasty in the Japanese warrior classes), though it is consenting.

-The Plague Returned in Winter by Mithrigil - Did you want teenaged Kojuro being fiercely protective of kid Masamune? Drawing on actual history in the process? HERE YOU GO. Attempted filicide, but no other warnings.

-Cutting Loose by Letterblade - pure Masamune/Kojuro PWP, extremely hot. Rough sex with some BDSM.

-The Baths of All The Western Stars by biichama and roachpatrol - A fantastic Helmsman!Sollux fic. As that suggests, body horror and dubious consent within.

-Our Lives on Holiday by ashkatom - A non-SGRUB revolution fic that's actually complete and incidentally AMAZING. Major character death and I will emphasize the 'canon-typical violence' part here, because revolutions are messy things.

-Wreckstuck by faithbegetsfaith - Delicious Alternia history and worldbuilding. All OCs, which makes it accessible to those not in fandom, and you will care way too much about these OCs. Major character death, non-con (but not a major feature), again with the canon-typical violence.

-The Vienna Game by paraTactician - I think half of HS fandom has read it already, but if you haven't - cyberpunk AU troll fic, with a ton of references and shout-outs to various classic cyberpunk works.

-After Us by toastyhat/emptyfeet - a fantastic Ancestor-centric fan animation.

-Firebirds by antiochene - An Avengers Vs. X-Men AU where people are actually in character and the plot makes more sense. Lots of action and story tension, as well as FEELINGS. Major character death, this will almost certainly make you cry. I'm not sorry.

-Rex Racer on the Final Turn by GrayJay - Alex and Scott Summers, and their relationship with each other. Parallels some early X-Men chronology leading up to Alex's introduction though knowing that material is more of a bonus than anything else. Truly fantastic exploration of two characters who frequently get the shaft both in canon and fandom. If you don't like Scott Summers but aren't sure why beyond 'he's uptight and boring', please read this and maybe reconsider?

-Learning Curve - Rictor and Shatterstar, exploring humanity and the bounds of their relationship.

Star Trek AOS - Graduate Vulcan For Fun and Profit by lazulisong - An exploration of James Kirk and his history through language-learning.

Coldfire Trilogy - Before the Face of the Sun by torch - an alternate ending that in my heart is the true one. One of my all-time favorite things to come out of Yuletide!

Pacific Rim - First A Darling, Then A Marvel by isozyme - post-movie, scientists-centric. Newt has a Bad Idea.

FF7 - The Things You Never Know About People by joudama - Turks-centric, particularly Reno, with some backstory and lovely Wutai-related worldbuilding. I didn't originally bookmark this and then totally failed to find it again, so for a long time I wasn't 100% sure I hadn't just dreamed it up.

FF7 - No Resistance by acidragdoll - Shinra-centric AMV set to 'Handlebars' by Flobots

Getbackers - Ivory Bridges by Branch - All the Fuuga relationships. ALL OF THEM.

No. 6 - The Future by ShironoOkami - A lovely post-script/epilogue to the series.

multi - Rock What You've Got by HananoJudgeHolden - Multi-series AMV to 'So Beautiful' by Superchick, celebrating positivity and girl power.

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

One epside for you all! Peacemaker Kurogane ep 15 - Poetry, with apologies for those of you reading this outside of the US, because I'm pretty sure Funimation region-locks. While it's mid-series, most of the plot stands on it's own pretty well, and it never fails to make me laugh. For bonus entertainment - at least some of the poems quoted are in fact actual poetry written by the actual Hijikata Toshizou. He had many outstanding qualities, but poetry was not one of them, and nearly every Shinsengumi historical fiction series likes poking fun at this.

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year.
-Talk about fandom stuff more often!
-Wear a 'fancy' outfit out once a week or so (as opposed to 'this is the first shirt and pair of pants I grabbed in my dresser'
-Attempt more art
-Make progress studying Japanese. ANY progress.

Also, 'make goals with a low barrier to entry', because it's too easy to fail and just be like 'well no point in continuing now' which is rather missing the point.

In your own space, post a rec for fannish and/or creative resources and spaces. Tell us where you go to dig up canon facts for your fandom, or where you get all the juicy details about your favorite ship. Where do you like to hang out and squee like a squeeing thing?

Most of my bookmarked resources are for cosplay, heh. Many are extremely specific (Japanese armor c. 1400-1600!), but for a general starting place, Cosplay Tutorial collates and organizes a great deal of information for easy reference. I'm also extremely fond of Minitokyo, which collects lots of high-res scans of official art for anime and Japanese games. Quality references are a godsend when working on costumes.

General research references usually take me to Wikipedia, and occasionally Google Scholar - being in historical-fiction fandoms means a lot of research. [ profile] little_details is not as active as it once was, but it has a wealth of knowledge stored in it, and is fairly well-tagged.

For more specific fandoms - [ profile] sparrowdreams posts translations and summaries of Japanese history and related historical fiction. Primarily Bakumatsu, but also occasionally Sengoku (usually Date-related). A lot of the quality information about these periods has never been 'officially' translated into English (and most of the small number of English-language references are iffy at best), so stumbling across her work was AMAZING. And then, while I'm not really in this fandom any more, the Bleach wikia is everything a fandom wiki could hope to be, and is probably better-cited than Wikipedia.

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

I did in fact do this thing but it was a private tumblr ask so, couldn't link it even if I wanted to *g*

In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go out and write a rec for your favorite tiny fandom. The one you love and wish more people would be interested in. Enable the rest of us!

Alternatively, if you have supplies or the motivation to acquire supplies, do a fandom-related craft! If you want an idea, may I suggest freezer-paper stenciling a shirt? Grocery stores will have the freezer paper, and craft stores will have the t-shirts, paints, and brushes. It works great for geometric designs - I've used this to make myself a Phoenix Force t-shirt, as well as doing a bunch of Homestuck stuff (two godtier symbols, a zodiac t-shirt, and Rose's black squiddle dress).
momijizukamori: Jyuushirou Ukitake from Bleach, grinning happily (Ukitake | niko niko)
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Much like [personal profile] silveradept, this is a little challenging for me because I don't do a lot of 'traditional' fanwork - fic/vid/art. But I have some! So we will do this thing.

1) My cosplay tag (or, if you prefer, the DW version, though the image display isn't as nice). Cosplay is most of my creative output, and look, I can't pick just one. It's photos! Photos are fast to skim!

2) Learning To Fall, a short gen Rufus fic which is nonetheless the longest thing on my AO3 account. A little exercise in character development that is actually Compilation canon-compliant.

3) Tracing Her Curves, a Kyoraku/Ukitake fic that ended up begetting a bunch of other short drabbles and a lot of RP. I'm just very fond of this AU, for whatever reason.

From [community profile] snowflake_challenge

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges?

All the cool kids were doing it! I saw it on my reading list, and two of the things I was hoping to do this year were to do more blogging, and to see if I could foster more fandom discussion on Dreamwidth. Tumblr has turned out to be great for posting and discussing cosplay stuff - I think in part because cosplay is such a visual medium, and tumblr really excels at that - but regular fandom discussion there is either really shallow or 'we eat our young'. So I avoid the tags and mostly just stick to my little circle of friends, which is relaxed, but not so great for making new friends or getting in to new stuff.

So at the very least, I hope to get my writing groove going, and if I'm lucky, maybe get more discussion started!

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

1) Fix-it fic for Peacemaker Kurogane. I've actually been trying to tempt someone into writing this for me for Parallels for a few rounds now, but this is a tiny fandom :( I don't even care if it's like, silly modern AU fix-it fic, I just want a universe where things end happily.

2) A Gundam 00 vid to U2's 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' featuring the Dylandys. I was frankly amazed one didn't exist already.

3) Hemlsman Captor fanart in all of it's wonderful body-horror glory.
