Vidya Gamin'
Monday, 27 December 2021 14:49I was all 'I should post more on DW!' and then uhhhh I finally hopped on the Switch bandwagon (one of the shiny new OLED ones) so that's where all my free time has been going. At the moment the only game I have is Breath of the Wild, though I have one of the Just Dance games coming my way. I like dance games but doing the set-up to play DDR is a pain so I don't do it that often - hoping that a game I don't have to rearrange the entire living room to play will mean I play more.
Breath of the Wild is fantastic, though at this point that is not news, haha. I've been a long-time Zelda fan - Link's Awakening was either the first or second game I ever bought for myself with my allowance money (Pokemon Blue was the other, and I can't remember now which order I bought them in). I've missed a few of the newer installments on DS/3DS, and I got stuck partway through Skyward Sword and still haven't finished it, but I have finished or played most of basically all the games before that. BotW is interesting because they changed a lot of stuff from previous incarnations, but it still feels very much a Zelda game. A friend called it 'Shadow of the Colossus meets Legend of Zelda', and while I've only seen gameplay vids of SotC, that does seem pretty accurate. I really like that they've removed a lot of the old elements that made things arbitrarily hard (how punishing dying was, limits on how many rupees/arrows/bombs you could carry), and replaced them with stuff that involves more skill and creativity to solve, like more puzzles and harder enemies. I also love the way bombs work now, as I was always terrible at timing on those, and the motion control aiming is fucking life-changing, I'm never going back to using the thumbsticks alone again.
Anyway! My Switch friends code is SW-4908-8867-3665, and I'm open to recs, both for games and for handy Switch accessories! I kind of lean towards rhythm, puzzle, and action-adventure these days, but can still appreciate a good RPG, too.
