(no subject)

Sometimes I look at my music library and am forced to confront the fact that at least half of it comes from the LJ FST comm circa 2005 (the other half is 'video game soundtracks I got from friends in college' and 'lots of industrial/EBM/new wave I torrented')

Which is I guess mostly okay except I don't want to become one of those adults who hates new music because I don't listen to it, so feel free to drop me some recs. I tend to prefer stuff with a strong melody line, but while my main library is a lot of industrial/new wave/90s-00s alt rock, I do have a little bit of everything.

This is going to be all over the place genre-wise but I can promise a melody line?

Also a few songs in the spirit of fst:

tropicsbear: An iPod and earbuds greet one another with "Hey buds" and "'Sup player" (Music)

My tastes are also all over the place, but I do talk about some songs I like over here. (Some of them are new, some of them aren't.)

The John Wick and Godzilla: King of the Monsters OSTs also came to mind when I was trying to think of newer stuff I listen to lol.

I have no recs because ahahahaha same. I miss that LJ comm; I found so much neat stuff there. The top 40 pop station that drones all day at the office doesn't cut it. I'm camping out on this post for 24 hours.

I am cheerfully recommending Will Wood and the Tapeworms to many people. Imagine a music nerd with 2 pianos, bipolar, a ska band, and a bone to pick with the entire medical and psychiatric industry, using the DSM and the Merck Manual as a rhyming dictionary. Except more listenable than that.

One of the best exemplars of that, though a bit light on the horns: Black Box Warrior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTGze0Hfr5w (lyrics version because it's helpful; none of these are suitable for blasting into an unknown environment because of strong mental illness and momento-mori content, and this one says both "Nazi" and "suicide" very loud)

My personal favorite: Mr. Capgras Encounters a Second-Hand Vanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJDv8arVAtg (nudity but no peen, genderfuckery and excessive use of makeup, screaming)

The entire Normal Album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQPfTorN8jA (these videos are often ok to read the comments "You know you’re listening to a will wood song when you can’t tell if it’s the sax hitting a curtain note or will screaming")

"Marsha, Thankk You for the Dialectics but I Need You to Leave" is basically Bruce Springsteen with a thesis about how modern mental health care sucks but it's better than the 50s equivalent.

I find myself mostly with 70s/80s rock most of the time. I wasn't even born in the 70s. I'm not sure what that says about me.

Oh, I don't mind the 70s rock. I like it. I also go through phases where the only thing I listen to is Queen (which spans three decades, but we can make a case for them also being 70s), which is fine. But I feel my knowledge of music stops somewhere for sure.
