Fandom year-in-review
Stealing from
adevyish!
Your main fandom of the year?
JJBA in the first half, Untamed/MDZS in the second half! Not that I have given up on JJBA but without the anime airing the fandom is relatively quiet.
Your favourite film you watched this year?
I... did I watch any movies this year? I guess seeing Run Lola Run for the first time is probably it - I think everything else was watching old Japanese films with my dad, which were interesting, particularly from a film history standpoint, but not necessarily things I'd rewatch.
Your favourite book read this year?
Tian Guan Ci Fu is up there (please join me in danmei hell), but I also enjoyed the hell out of the Murderbot books which were the right flavor of snarky slightly dystopic SF to be right up my alley. Shoutouts also to Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy, and Yoon Ha Lee's Machinaries of Empire trilogy (of which I still need to read books two and three of)
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
I've been doing a lot of Spotify shuffle which has kind of carried me over into new wave land (lots of Bauhaus and Siouxie and the Banshees), but
shingetsu turned me on to Lord Huron and I listened to Strange Trails enough for it to show up in my Spotify year-end summary, so.
Your favourite TV show of the year?
Untamed! Though there were some real solid anime series this year - new Golden Kamuy season, more Idolish7, Somali and the Forest Spirit, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Dorohedoro.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
MXTX fandoms in general, Untamed/MDZS fandom in specific. I don't know how it managed to make the crossover leap outside of the niche of c-drama fans, but it did and it remains wild.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Lack of conventions :c
Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
I mean, none, really, because I don't think about my faves that way, but I continue to want Hua Cheng's entire style, and ability to kick ass while princess-carrying his boyfriend.
Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
See above, with the bonus that my main fandoms were all pretty light on female characters, but I would die for Jiang Yanli.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Hmm. Not sure I could pinpoint any specific moments, really, though I definitely squeed over the costumes and set design for The Untamed. In personal moments of happiness, I'm really glad I got Moody Blues mostly done for the one con I went to (I have photos! Which I still need to put up... anywhere....)
The most missed of your old fandoms?
Mmm, CLAMP stuff, maybe? Had some nostalgia moments when they announced the new TB anime. I also had a handful of moments where I missed DWRP until I remembered why I quit, lol
A fandom you haven’t tried yet but want to?
Falling deeper into danmei novel hell, I suppose. I also have a giant pile of Western novels I bought and haven't read yet, but I don't really get into fandoms for those.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Tokyo Babylon anime, even though I have set my expectations fairly low for that. Actually going to cons again, hopefully.

It is SO WILD to see it make the jump. My coworker and I, neither of us who read or watch the thing, have been discussing how we’ve finally culturally made it and also kind of bracing for bad Twitter threads about history and culture lol. Like, as an anime fan it is probably karma for me :p
I don’t even normally go to cons but I miss artist alleys so much!

I'm really curious if it'll be the first of many, or if it's just a weird aberration. Definitely some of the Discourse(tm) I've seen the edges of on tumblr are, as someone I follow put it, 'baby's first anime fandom' (or as I have been thinking of it, 'fujoshi discourse 2.0').
Cosplay is my main fandom creative output so without cons I have been dying inside. You'd think with all this free time I could get a headstart on partially finished projects, but it turns out without deadlines I get nothing done.

Both of those are way too apt. I kind of kept out of Yuri on Ice fandom for the same reason even though I love the show. Don’t make me revive my “thoughts on yaoi” tag!
Yeah I also need deadlines, so I feel you. I started arbitrarily making myself post on lunar holidays for one of my fics just so I would actually write something.

Being in JoJo fandom since ... 2007? I find myself bemused by the wild upswings of activity whenever an anime installment is out. I'm expecting Stone Ocean to come out either in 2021 or 2022, accompanied by more activity.

Yeah, late 2021 or 2022 seems like a distinct possibility, with the way the other parts have been timed. I only really got into jojos with the part 5 anime, but I've been kind of aware of on the periphery of my vision via seeing cosplayers at cons, and it seems like with every anime part, the fandom gets a little bit bigger, like a snowball rolling downhill.

Now time to pester you to watch Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty.
*pester pester*

I mean, I was always kind of hanging around the periphery of it, lol. I need to build up some hand work before I start on another tv series, though, I'm too ADHD to watch television without something else to do and right now I'm kind of between projects....
