Nerd Wars: My Round 1 Submissions
Photos and descriptions behind the cut because I'm long-winded ;)
Scientifc: Nebulas - Pillars of Creation Cowl
Inspired by the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula - one of the locations in the computer game Mass Effect 2. The original intent was to have larger bands of color, encompassing the entire circumferance of the cowl, but the black dye bleed horrible onto the bottom side while I was heating it, ruining that particular dream. I also tried to do tie-resist starts and failed at that, too.
However! I feel like the back side does have a nice dusty ‘nebula’ look to it, care of the slightly broken black (I also rinsed it under REALLY HOT water as soon as I realized how badly the back had bleed, to try and get some of the black out). I also ended up adding a starfield across the whole back in the shimmery acrylic, and I’m very pleased with the end effect - even though there were a few points in the middle where I wanted to throw the thing at the wall.

Intellectual: Primes - Saria's Shawl
A triangular shawl with triangular borders - the Aestlight - (3s), knit in 3 directions (body, border, and edging are all added a different way), in 2 colorways, with 29 edge pattern repeats. The second color is overdyed, rather than being a different base dyelot - one packet each of cherry and orange koolaid to get a nice reddish brown out of the green.
Because I was going up to sport-weight, and size 8 needles, I decided to make it a little smaller than the ‘small’ pattern so that it didn’t become a blanket - so I knit to sixteen stitches shorter on the body, which takes an edging repeat off each side (original count was 31 repeats). The colors remind me of the Lost Woods, a recurring setting in many of the Zelda games, and in particular, the character of Saria, who is their guardian in Ocarina of Time

Team Spirit: Valentine's Day - This Moogle's Got A Lotta Heart
First time crocheting in over a decade! But armed with my handy library copy of Crochet for Dummies, I made it through. The pattern is modified very slightly - I didn’t make a round bobble, as this was a Valentine’s Day moogle, and instead made a heart. The main body and head are all acrylic, and then the colored bits I crocheted up in Cascade 220 in white and then microwave acid-dyed to the appropriate colors.

Technical: Bonding Action - Summoner's Satchel
Technically three fibers, but the third’s the lining and thus doesn’t really count ;) The body is recycled silk and worsted weight black acrylic that I am fairly certain is from the 70s. The acrylic was navajo-plied as I knit to make a triple-weight, and thus a nice, thick fabric band to support the drapier silk, but this meant it was a little hard to purl on my US 10.5s, and had a tendancy to try to slip off the end (guess who cast on too many stitches and had to revise her sewing plan halfway in). The silk, on the other hand, makes a nice drapey fabric on 10.5, but it’s sheddy, overtwisted, and thick and thin, which meant wrestling stitches was a pain. The inside is lined in polar fleece (which I believe is polyester) - I was going to do cotton but couldn’t find my stash of extra. This adds a little more shape to the bag, and keeps things from inside from snagging on the sometimes-delicate silk yarn.
The bright colors contrasted so sharply with dark ones in geometic patterns reminded me of a lot of the clothing designs from Spira, in the video game Final Fantasy X, so I embroidered the symbol from the head of protagonist Yuna’s Summoner's Staff onto the bag flap as extra decorations. And hey, she could probably use somewhere to stash all those extra potions people keep giving her.

Nerd Culture: Nerdwarscon - Rinoa Armwarmers
Easy but oh my god ribbing is tedious and dull.
But they are a gift for a friend who loves Rinoa, so I know they will be loved.

WHICH REMINDS ME that Redwall dinner thingy we were going to do. Up for the end of next week? (Fellow Redwall fanfriend is visiting me from Oregon, for Weds/Thurs/Fri)
EDITS EDITS EDITS FOREVER
OR, actually, & this might be preferred depending on when your friend is leaving: I can aim to get the thesis done by Friday and then be TOTALLY FANTASTICALLY FREE to reap the Redwallian reward Friday afternoon/night/whichever?
Unless you meant "end of next week once she is gone and I am done being a good host", in which case I am an idiot.
Re: EDITS EDITS EDITS FOREVER
Go forth and work on your thesis, young one XD
